Fireworks

Bright splashes of color
dance across the dark night sky
with surprising energy
in a shower of vivid lights.

Tonight is the perfect night
to stay awake
because a warm night in July
is suddenly sparkling with new excitement.

Golden fireworks that look
like weeping willow trees
explode into the sky
and slowly disappear.

Other fireworks twinkle
softly, gently, yet still loudly
like bright yellow stars
that line the now smoke-filled sky.

The rest of the fireworks
have their own funky, unique designs,
some shoot up high and explode,
blinding lights erupt,
and reflect in our wide eyes.

There are bangs and clashes and crazy flashes
that send babies crying
and brave toddlers running
to their mothers.

Fireworks are free and exhilarating,
making even adults suck in their breath
so nervously,
cracking their knuckles as they wait for the next one.

Noises help people stay awake,
but sleeping tonight
would be a big mistake.
